Just in time for National Pizza Month
in October and the 100th anniversary of America’s first
pizzeria, Chicago magazine dining editors Penny Pollack
and Jeff Ruby gather the collected wisdom of the country’s
top pizza-ologists in Everybody Loves Pizza: The Deep Dish
on America’s Favorite Food
Americans consume 350 slices of pizza every
second, an amount equal to 100 acres a day. Everybody Loves
Pizza celebrates this fanatical devotion to our favorite
dish with a fascinating look at the origins of pizza in Italy
and its evolutions in American culture—plus delicious
recipes from acclaimed pizza makers and tantalizing color
photos.
Everybody Loves Pizza also reveals
where you can find more than 500 top-notch pizzerias across
the United States, as judged by food writers, pizza insiders,
and ordinary, pizza-loving Americans. The country’s
pizza loyalties are divided, but whether your region flies
the flag of New York-style thin crust, New Haven white clam,
Chicago deep-dish or California healthy gourmet, a pizza joint
near you is serving it up hot and delicious.
Dig into Everybody Loves Pizza for:
- The 10 best pizzas in the country
- Recipes from the familiar (Barbecue
Chicken Pizza, pg. 80) to the exotic (Prosciutto Pear Pizza,

- Inside stories and personal interviews
with big-name pizza personalities
- And much more!
Penny Pollack has been the dining
editor of Chicago magazine since 1994. Under her direction,
the dining department produced “Through Thick and Thin,” the
magazine’s comprehensive 1998 pizza feature, which was
nominated for a James Beard Award. An avid traveler, Pollack
has explored many of the cuisines of Europe, the Middle East,
Australia, Costa Rica and the Caribbean. Though anonymous,
the Chicago native has been a guest on all major talk radio
programs in Chicago, and has had lengthy runs as a guest critic
for various media outlets. Most recently, Pollack was recognized
by Crain’s Chicago Business as one of “Chicago’s
Media Elite.”
Jeff Ruby is a senior editor at
Chicago magazine. He has reviewed restaurants since 1997,
and wrote The Official Chicago Bar Guide, the definitive
book on Chicago’s nightlife. He also delivered pizzas
for beer money in a beat-up Volvo during grad school in Lawrence,
Kansas, until the brakes went out. He currently lives in Chicago
with his wife and child.
