This novel is about an African American woman, Janie Crawford,
and how she has changed and grown throughout her life especially
through her three marriages. The novel opens with Janie in
her early forties returning back to her town after she had
left with her third husband but she returns alone. Janie then
tells her life story to her best friend through an extended
flashback which is what the majority of the novel is focused
on. In the beginning of Janie’s story she is 16 years
old and she is unsure who she is and what she wants in her
life. We see Janie’s development throughout the narrative
of her story and at the end she has become a strong and proud
woman. - Lydia, Bookseller Barbara's UIC
