Mark Falanga
Tuesday 10.26 7:30pm UIC
Mark Falanga was a slick urbanite with a corporate exec wife, who hung in the coolest neighborhood in Chicago. But when baby made three, Mark and family entered the suburban twilight zone, where many wives stay home and children ride tricycles in the driveway. With wit and a love of the absurd, Falanga views his new landscape as a bewildered, gung-ho everyman. From competitive block parties and a consuming holiday-card rivalry, to surprises lurking on every corner-such as the pyromaniac kid next door to the oddly broad-shouldered “lady” on the commuter train-THE SUBURBAN YOU describes the vicissitudes of life in the ’burbs.

Jim Steinmeyer
Thursday 10.28 7:30pm Oak Park
Houdini was the greatest escape artist in history, yet known to his contemporaries as a terrible stage magician. Nevertheless, he performed a single illusion that has been hotly debated ever since: Under the bright lights of the Hippodrome Theater, he made a live elephant disappear. Where did he learn this amazing trick? How did it work? The astonishing answers lie in magic expert Jim Steinmeyer’s chronicle of illusionary innovation, chicanery and espionage, HIDING THE ELEPHANT: How Magicians Invented the Impossible and Learned to Disappear. Join us for a night of magic, both from the page and the stage.

Lori Grove & Laura Kamadulski
Saturday 10.30 4:00 pm UIC
Anyone who saw Maxwell Street had a story about Maxwell Street. You didn’t have to shop there, work there, or eat there. You didn’t have to be Jewish. You just had to go there or merely pass-by, in order for it to be in your mind forever. In CHICAGO’S MAXWELL STREET: Images of America - Lori Grove and Laura Kamaduski, both members of the Board of the Maxwell Street Historic Preservation District, share stories and images from this unforgettable, now lost, world. This event is part of Barbara’s ongoing series on Maxwell Street and the Near West Side.
