This book is poetically beautiful. MacDonald paints us a vivid picture on the many ways of how the human soul copes with the loss of a great loved one. After the loss of her father, who she was close with, a trained falconer decides to tackle one of the most difficult birds, a goshawk, to help distract herself from grief. However, Helen didn’t expect to see so much of herself in the hawk and is now faced with the challenges of caring for the raptor as well as tending to her own personal wounds. - jp

Pullman has created such a fantastic world with compelling characters and is filled with much depth and thought. Our heroine Lyra, although young, is someone whom I believe surpasses those that we see in The Hunger Games, Divergent, and such. What’s really impressive is how Pullman is able to bring about mature themes, such as physics, theology and morality, into a basic good vs. evil story for young readers. - jp

I personally believe that Rothfuss should be placed among the likes of Tolkien and McCaffrey in terms of epic fantasy. Filled with adventure and humor we follow Kvothe: a cunning, arrogant but likeable hero as he falls to his lowest moments and rises up to his more proud moments which, unfortunately, are short lived. Come and read the tale a washed up inn keeper and how he had become an imperfect hero! - jp

President James Abram Garfield is not a president many people know about, except that he was President of the United States for only seven months. Much like what Larson did for The Devil in the White City Millard gives us an easily accessible account of who President Garfield really was and how his assassination attempt had brought the whole country together in mourning and why several civilians, such as one Alexander Bell, had came to the aide of a dying president they all believed in. - jp

I couldn’t put this book down, nor could I stop laughing. I would like to argue that this is, perhaps, one of the best American novels ever written. Filled with bizarre characters in ridiculous circumstances we are introduced to Ignatius J. Reilly, our pompous and eccentric hero as he tries to find a job to match his intellectual stimuli in a world that he finds disagreeable. - jp
