How's your existence lately? Have any questions about the meaning of it all--this absurd cyclical routine of wake, work, eat, sleep that's having you look ever too fondly at a bottle? If so this might be the book for you if some pedantic professor hasn't already strong-armed you into reading it. A novel exploring the existential quandary set in Algeria during a bubonic plague, it allegorically examines the lives of those living within the zone of affliction and how they cope or do not.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Paperback)

Until recently I was one of the few bunkered cold-war era hold-outs surviving in the dark nibbling at the contents of expired cans of beans when I dared to open the hatch and crawl out. I emerged from my cave into the blinding light of a world overrun with HP (Harry Potter) fanatics and was immediately bitten by one, forced by the virus to read this book and its predecessors and I have been flouncing about ever since in a state of euphoria. I'm assuming this was a positive stroke and you too should read the series because it's serious fun and, hey, there are movies to boot.

Gale Gand's Brunch!: 100 Fantastic Recipes for the Weekend's Best Meal (Hardcover)

By Gale Gand, Christie Matheson
$27.50
ISBN-13: 9780307406989
Availability: On Our Shelves Now
Published: Clarkson Potter, 4/2009
When the overwhelming urge to eat the book jacket itself welled in my belly I knew I needed this cookbook to squelch the unbearable possibility that I might not eat the food advertised on its cover. After restraining myself, I actually cooked the recipe and it was, I daresay, much better than any paper product could have possibly been. It was easy to make, quick, and outrageously delicious. That said, what meat eater doesn't like bacon? Furthermore, I think an inquisition of all those who dislike pancakes would not be going overboard. Let them eat brunch!

Will Grayson, Will Grayson (Paperback)

By John Green, David Levithan
$8.99
ISBN-13: 9780142418475
Availability: On Our Shelves Now
Published: Speak, 4/2011

It takes a lot of mettle to write about flamboyantly gay teenage love in Chicago, and it's done with hilarity, honesty, angst, and an entire slew of positive nouns in Will Grayson. This book is as much of terrific of a read as it is a terrific conversation piece. Often YA (Young Adult) novels merely prop limp words together with sticks and secondhand scotch tape until A is added to B and then equals out after C gets squared--puke--but this yarn is original and fun and heartwarming for those of us with minds and hearts and eyes that work well in conjunction while staring at ink on paper.

The Stories of Breece D'J Pancake (Paperback)

By Breece D'J Pancake, Andre Dubus III
$13.99
ISBN-13: 9780316715973
Availability: On Our Shelves Now
Published: Back Bay Books, 7/2002
Other Editions of this Title
If you're not swayed by the egregiously cute illustration of a fox on its cover or by the fact that the author's name is Pancake perhaps there's nothing I can write to persuade you to spend time on these hard, spare, brilliant pages of this eternally young man. Still, I'll say it anyway: you should have a go at it. His writing is not just West Virginian, although it is, it is like all good literature in that it's more--it is America and family and our nature all set down for you in neat, steady prose that has a feel that is impacting. Like Hemingway or John Irving, his stories do not dazzle you with showmanship, but haunt you from truer places that won't escape you after the lights have gone out and it's time to turn in.
