If you're not swayed by the egregiously cute illustration of a fox on its cover or by the fact that the author's name is Pancake perhaps there's nothing I can write to persuade you to spend time on these hard, spare, brilliant pages of this eternally young man. Still, I'll say it anyway: you should have a go at it. His writing is not just West Virginian, although it is, it is like all good literature in that it's more--it is America and family and our nature all set down for you in neat, steady prose that has a feel that is impacting. Like Hemingway or John Irving, his stories do not dazzle you with showmanship, but haunt you from truer places that won't escape you after the lights have gone out and it's time to turn in.
