The neighborhood book store has largely gone the way of the dodo bird. Just thirty years ago, you could not swing a cat without hitting a book store (of course, we would never swing a cat, it's not good for the cat). Now, sadly, you would be considered lucky to have a bookstore somewhere in the general vicinity, but you'd probably have to drive or take public transportation to get to it.
Barbara's has operated a number of book stores throughout our existence, too many to mention, some of which were typical neighborhood book stores.
One former book store that fondly comes to mind is Barbara's Oak Park, on the corner of Lake St. and Marion St. We proudly served the Oak Park community for over three decades.
But, things change and time moves on, there's not much we can do about that. What we can do, however, and what we hope we have done, is accept the challenges time presents and embrace the change (I know, pretty cliche..).
This is why you can find us in some non-typical locations like an office building, department store, hospital and airport, and some typical places like village and/or town centers.
